Another year is upon us as I
know a few of you are already getting started. The Huskerland board has held
2 meetings, addressed a few concerns brought to us by yourselves, and a few
more that have cropped up. I’ll try to go over each point clearly.
-
We have a new
board member. Dave Hochstetler of Dorchester
replaces Joe Hansen in charge of timers and scorers during the
tournament. Joe did a great job for several years but we feel Dave will
step in smoothly. Many of you know him from his many years of
involvement with the Dorchester club.
-
The date for
Huskerland 22 has been firmed
up. Dates are April 6-7,2007 at the UNK Sports Center. We want to get
away from the Easter weekend but other commitments by the facility
prevent that at this time.
-
We were asked about
fingernail and skin checks. Our referees will make a quick check as the
first round of each session begins. They will not always catch problems,
we are all human. We ask for your help as coaches to help insure your
wrestlers have no communicable skin diseases and that their fingernails
are trimmed.
-
We had quite a discussion
about coach’s passes. We instituted coach’s passes and charged $2 for
the entire tournament mainly to keep unneeded persons off the floor and
make it easier for all legitimate coaches to get to the mats. Obviously
$2 for both days for floor access is less than $5 per day admission. A
few clubs took advantage of this and suddenly brothers, sisters,
grandmas and grandpas were all coaches. A club had 12 entries and 25
coaches. They forced us to make a change and I am going over my board’s
head on this and compromising. This year passes will be $2 for the first
5 coaches, then $10 for additional coaches. Many of you know who caused
this and I advise you to apply peer pressure. This is clearly a
situation where the actions of a few cost the majority who play by the
intent of the rule.
-
High school overtime rules
changed. After some discussion we decided to make no change to our old
procedure. Huskerland OT remains: 1 minute Sudden Victory followed by a
30 second tie-breaker if needed. Escape or ride out to win.
-
The
Young Officials Program
continues to progress. If any of your high school wrestlers would like
to be involved for the coming year, they need to contact Chuck Sherer as
soon as possible. His address and e-mail are shown on the Huskerland
website.
-
There was a change in the
rule to challenge a match score. We are not changing this either; you
can challenge or question the score of a match at Huskerland UNTIL the
wrestler leaves the mat. With the age of our wrestlers, referees will
exercise some discretion but try to keep your wrestler matside if you
have a score question.
-
We created a “Mission
Statement” and it is on the Huskerland website. Please read it.
-
We will have a method for
paid clubs to enter their competitors online themselves and save a
couple dollars. Details will be mailed to all member clubs about March
1st. This option will not be available to non-dues paying clubs.
-
Jim Allen is again heading
up the Huskerland Duals to be held at
Grand Island Sr High. It’s a highly competitive yet fun event. Contact
Jim for details and put together a team if you can.
-
We are always considering
nominees for the Huskerland Hall
of Fame. They should be people who have made a contribution to kids
wrestling over the years as a coach, club director, or as a board
member. We want to recognize outstanding individuals from all over the
state. They should be someone who is unlikely to be named to any other
hall of fame. If you have someone you’d like to see nominated contact
Craig Hellwege or a Huskerland Manager.
-
Another important point: if
your club has not paid dues by March 1, you WILL NOT BE mailed the final
packet with state entry forms and information. You will be forced to go
to the web and download non-club entry forms. Again a few clubs received
the mailing, had not paid dues, and yet sent entry fees meant for member
clubs. Now my usual plug for wrestling at all levels. Get your kids out
to watch their local high schools and help them build interest for the
years ahead. Or take them to a college meet if possible. Nebraska-Omaha
is the 3-time defending NCAA division 2 champion and Nebraska-Kearney
finished 2nd last year. UNL has many wrestlers highly ranked as well.
Dana College won the National NAIA title last year too. Chadron, York,
have teams and Hastings is adding the sport. These teams are built
around Nebraska kids who came through clubs like yours. Don’t be shy and
be sure to say “Hello” if you see me anywhere in the coming months.
